I’m 17 years old and I’m a full time high school student in Massachusetts and I work part-time at CVS. What taxes am I required to pay, and what taxes do I get back in January?

So far for the year 2008, I have had about $1,700 deducted for taxes. They are:

Federal Income Tax: ~$620
FICA / SS: ~$520
FICA / MED: ~$120
State Tax MA: ~410

I’m assuming I don’t get the SS or MED taxes back. But as a citizen under the age of 18, still living with his parents, and a full time student, am I entitled to get most, if not all the state and federal tax back?
sorry I’m new to all of this so maybe I’m just be ignorant. But if I have to pay federal and state taxes shouldn’t that mean I have the same rights as everybody else? Including voting?
Total Earnings: ~$8,400

I am in the middle of a divorce and the temporary custody orders were based on my old salary of 35k a year. I lost my job, but have recently found work part time making 12hr @ 21hrs a week (give or take). I don’t plan on staying like that but I had to find an income quick.

Now the final divorce decree was put on hold until I was able to find work, but the courts have let us know that we must have this final by month end. My question is, will they base my support on my part time hours? Or take 12hr at full time 40 hours a week? How would I be able to pay that If that’s not what I am making?

Also, I am seeking cheap or free legal service to defend myself in this divorce, as you can see I can’t afford an attorney but my wife can. Any ideas? I live in Texas.

I was working full time for about 12 dollars an hour 6mos ago and I am out of the job and will hopefully find a new job. I made roughly 13k post taxes and I think I can live on this while I finish school. The problem is I don’t know if I want to do both FULL time, if I worked part time how much would I have to earn in an hr to maintain this income? I know it’s simple math but I want to hear from some other people. I’ll then decide whether to go full time to work or school or what types of jobs to look for that may meet these demands (and if I am qualified for them and so on), but for now I think I just want this question answered.

Thank you!

I am not sure as to what to enter in these parts:

-Amount of support payments received from a resident of another country
-Income exempt under a tax treaty
-Amount of foreign tax paid

I already have a full time job, but I’d like to get a part-time job to pay off some old debt and start adding to my savings. Between my full time job and being a single mom, I don’t have the flexibility to go to a part-time job at nights. I would love to find something that would allow me to work from home/telecommute because I have plenty of free time, but I’m just not able to leave the house. How does a person find a legitimate telecommuting part-time job? Do staffing agencies have these kind of jobs?

I’m not looking to triple my income or make thousands per week completeing surveys, just regular work with regular pay.

I am 14 years old(will be 15 in november) and my mother is letting me get a summer job for the summer. I have one older sister is getting a summer job too. I have two younger siblings. We get an average income each year($83,000)….So we aren’t poor or anything. The problem is because is the economic crisis right now. My parents are juggling paying for our extra curricular activities, physical needs, and plus they are a little bit in debt right now.

The reason my mother is letting me have a summer job is because she told me she can’t afford my back to school clothes. So I will have to work for my clothes this summer, and so will my older sister.

The problem is that because of the situation they are in right now is making is it extremely hard for them to support my needs. For instance,I have to wait two weeks to get a thing of shampoo or some deodorant.

So the thing is is that I think I should get a part-time job for when school starts back up but ONLY ON THE WEEKENDS. I would make maybe $250 a month which would help TREMENDOUSLY with my needs. I would still have enough time to study, because I would only be working maybe 5-7 hours on Saturday and Sunday and I would still get to study at night like I would on the weekdays.

I get good grades…I usually maintain a B average. So there isn’t a problem with that. But my mom says no to letting me get a job when school starts back up….And I can’t understand why. The reason she is even making me get a job for the summer so I can pay for my back to school clothes screams that she can’t really pay for some of my needs right now.

So how do I convince her to let me get a job for when school starts back up??

P.S. I already have a job at an ice cream shop and I start on Monday. And sorry this was long haha

Thanks and God bless :)

I am a travel nurse, I am originally from Mississippi but only lived and worked there for 2 months this year, then I worked in Massachusetts for 5 months, NYC for 3 months, and Florida (which doesn’t have state income taxes) for the remaining two.
My tax person says I have to file Mississippi as my permanent residence even though I was there for 2 months…which works out to me owing the state of Mississippi over $2000 in taxes.
My question is, can I be a part time resident in all the states I worked since the longest I was in any was 5 months? Or is Mass my permanent residence for this tax season because I was there the longest? or is my tax person right?

I get the max benefit for 6 months, but wondering if I can work part time and if so:

- how many hours/week?
- what formula is then used to reduce your benefit?

I’m wondering if a job that pays $8/hr will actually help me ad to my income or hurt me. I’d like to work, but if it reduces my total monthly benefit and I’m not making it up and more doing p/t work, then why bother?
doesn’t seem like the system gives people much incentive to return to work, other than full time, which is not easily done in MI.

thanks in advance for your help

With my current job im only working part time hours and earn about 5500 a year. I believe at 6k (or something in that region) is the tax cap before i start paying tax? (at the moment i get charged no tax at all).

My question is; if i was to start buying and selling shares, will the profit from that go on to my overall income and push me over the tax free amount, in turn making me to start paying tax monthly? Is that how it works?

If anyone could clear it up for me i’d be very thankful.

Cheers guys.

I have a 40 hr. a week job 9-5 and I make about $30-35K a year. I live on my own and I have a daughter, in a state where I do not know anyone. Daycare fees are KILLING me!!!! I would be just fine if I wasn’t paying 800 a month for daycare…Anywho, I am in the whole per month (maybe 100-300) and I need extra income. I do not know anyone who could watch my daughter (especially for free) for me to go work on the weekends waiting tables or something, but I need a part time job bad….I have awesome admin skills and data entry, but I would need a job that I can take my daughter with me or something! Any advice anyone? Thanks!
By the way, my daughter is 8 months old if that matters.
By the way, I don’t qualify for any assistance for daycare at all..According to the chart (in TX) I make too much money…Doesn’t seem like it though!! I also talked to the daycare and they took 5 bucks off a week…lol
I live in a 1 bedroom apartments and I have made all the cuts I possibly could make….. And I found the cheapest daycare I could possibly find too. Sucks!

I have been employed for over 3 yrs at a full-time job that I love but I need extra income since I became single again recently. My full-time job hours are 8-5pm mon-Fri and I was offered a part-time job that I will work during the weekend and some weekend nights after my full-time job. This part-time position requires a 2 week training session that would start at 4pm Mon-Fri, so I would have to leave my day job early for 2 weeks. I’m wondering how and if I should approach this subject with my employer and since I have been trying for about 6 months to find a part-time job I really don’t want to pass on this opportunity. Or should I just tell them that I need to leave early for personal reasons for the next 2 weeks and not tell them exactly why????

I have been working full time for 20 years. My plan is to leave my job 2011 and work locally part time there after. Using the SS calculator at the SS Gov website shows my benefits to be pretty good at my current expected level of income even if I stop working 2011. But if my income in my new job is half that amount for the last 15 years before retirement would my SS benefit calulation be based on the new lower income amount?
I would like to think I can return to the work force after my first career. Thanks.

I am a a college student with a part-time job. I make about $15,000 a year but a significant amount of money is deducted each month for fica taxes. Last year my parents claimed me as a dependent but I am wondering if they can do that this year given my income? My parents pay for college but I pay most of my own expenses. Is there an advantage for me to be claimed as a dependent if I am eligible, or would it be better for me to file my own taxes?
